Risk Analysis Task
This task requires you to prepare a risk analysis for new machinery at the Antz pre-forming plant.
These machines require specialised skills and the physical ability to operate them safely. The operator must be able to reach the main switches, and this could be difficult for a shorter person.
What would happen if a person couldn't reach the switches and fell? This is a concern. On the other hand, Antz doesn't want to deny anyone the opportunity to work because of their height.
For the risk analysis, you need to outline the risks using a recognised process and suggest control actions. The information you need is in the health and safety section of the office. More information can be found by searching the web or libraries. Particularly useful websites are those of the New Zealand Government's Accident Compensation Commission and the Department of Labour.
You need to work within your forum teams to research and answer the task questions, and then collate and present your completed risk analysis.
Organise your forum team
You need to organise your forum team. You can nominate yourself for positions or suggest other team members. Your forum team needs to:
- choose a facilitator to direct discussions within the team
- decide how the members of your team will work together to research the task questions and deliver feedback (you need to agree on who will research each question)
- choose a reporter to collate and write up the team's findings.
Plan your research
When researching the information, you need to address these questions:
- Can Antz deny someone the opportunity to work because of their height?
- What potential hazards will the new machinery pose during operation?
- What processes are required to ensure safety during installation, transport, handling, and storage?
- What changes to existing processes, supervision. and training are required?
- What are the agents of harm?
- What are the mechanisms of harm?
- What control methods are required?
- What specific actions are required?
Follow the your tutor's instructions for the format and layout of the task when you present the risk analysis. This is a collaborative task - share with each other and do the best you can.
