Introducing Antz
Antz is a large organisation running many construction projects. These can range from refurbishing a large city office block to building a granny flat on a small rural property.
Anthony was a builder with a sharp business sense. From a small team of builders, he built the company up to become a large construction business employing more than 200 staff. The company now specialises in modern construction and refurbishment, and supplies pre-formed construction materials to its building sites. Initially, the business serviced only the local market, but demand has increased and they now run projects nationwide.
The business aims to be on the cutting edge of enterprise within their sector and to be the first choice in construction. They are presently considering revamping the pre-forming plant with new machinery that has the potential to increase their production by one third. This will mean an initial outlay that will pay for itself within three years. Staff will need retraining, and a health and safety analysis needs to be completed to check the implications of introducing the new machinery.
Anthony is the company's Chief Executive. All the managers report directly to him. He is a hands-on manager with a strong belief in teamwork. He often calls into work areas unannounced to see how things are going.
There is a range of work situations and circumstances at Antz.
The administrative staff are responsible for developing and implementing the policy, systems, and processes that provide a working framework for the business services. Administrative staff work in management, human resources, marketing, sales, finance, and clerical positions.
Imelda is the Human Resources Manager. She oversees the management of the company's human resources. She manages Ben, the Human Resources Advisor who is the central character in our story, and Jo, an independent Human Resources Advisor, who provides some useful advice.
The construction staff work on building construction and renovation projects at external sites.
Staff within the supply areas work in supply depots attached to various construction sites. They ensure the required equipment arrives where it is needed and at the right time.
Workers at the pre-forming plant produce partially assembled construction materials.
The machine operating jobs at Antz include forklift operators in the supply depots, and digger and bulldozer operators on the construction sites.
