Managing change is an important management activity in these fast-changing times. A manager needs to have very strong leadership and people skills, because staff affected by change are often angry and fearful.

One technique for creating change has been suggested by psychologist Kurt Lewin. He argues that an organisation becomes set in its ways and that, to get change, you have to ‘unfreeze’ it by supporting pressures for change. Once unfrozen, the organisation (like liquid glass or metal) can be put into another shape before it hardens (or freezes) again. This requires very skilful action by the manager.
