Sharon has become a manager

Sharon works for a store in a suburban area in New Zealand. The area is a fast-growing satellite of a major city and the store is due for some big improvements in the not-too-distant future.

There are 30 full-time and 12 part-time staff. There is also a list of 10 people, available on a casual basis, who can be called at short notice to work when required. The business was established in 1995 and half the staff have been there from its first day of operation. The staff comprises a mixture of gender and culture that sometimes requires careful management. There seems to be a division between those doing the job out of economic necessity and those who see a future within the organisation and want to be innovative and expand the business and its customer base. Those in the second group are always looking for opportunities to improve their positions within the company.

Sharon started working in the business in 2002 and has shown tremendous potential. She gets on well with the staff and has always been keen to take on extra work and responsibilities. She sometimes is a little too eager and can upset older staff members with her constant high energy level.

A vacancy has arisen for assistant manager. Sharon has been accepted for promotion to the job.
