Sharon’s old friend, Dave, has years of experience as a manager. When they went for a drink recently, he had a feeling she would get the promotion she was talking about with so much confidence. He told her she could get in touch whenever she wanted if she needed to share some of her management experiences and needs. That is exactly what Sharon decides to do now that the promotion has become reality. This is the email she sends to Dave:
Subject: Got the job!

Hi Dave,
Know what? I got the promotion I mentioned to you the other day. I am now officially the assistant manager. I’m so excited!
But you were right when you said so many things would change. I feel a little uneasy about how I should exercise my ‘managerial power’ – I don’t want to lose my friendship with people just because I might have to tell them to do things. Yet I think that this could happen. I know for sure I don’t want to have an old-fashioned management style, but what style should I adopt anyway? I am particularly concerned with how I should use my new ‘power’ and ‘authority’.
I am really grateful with your offer to help and it made me feel so much better the other day. I feel I need support from friends like you to make sure I do this new job well. Looking forward to your advice!
Cheers,
Sharon
