What are management styles?

A manager’s personality will affect their management style.
Some are more people-centred while others are more production-centred.
Depending on their personality, managers might be:
- extroverted and enjoy action
- introverted and enjoy analysis
- calm and dependable
- emotional and undependable
- a mixture of some of these.
A management style should fit the needs of the organisation, but many managers find it difficult to change their styles.
Effects of different approaches to management
Every manager has a different management style. These differences will affect their staff and their customers.
How do they affect staff?
Staff are more likely to comply with and accept change from managers they know and like. An informal atmosphere where managers behave reasonably is less likely to be confrontational or to attract legal action.
What about customers?
Customers prefer a friendly relationship with those they are doing business with. Friendly but efficient managers are likely to attract and keep customers. On the other hand, poor management, which leads to inefficiency and unhappy staff, is likely to discourage customers.
