  • Student Helpdesks

    Our Student Helpdesks are available to answer any of your questions across all campuses. The Student Helpdesks can direct you to places on campus, make appointments for you, issue library resources for you to use, and help you with your computing issues. They are also a point of contact with the wider support services team. Don’t know who to ask? Start with the Student Helpdesks!

  • Engagement Advisors

    Money issues? Problems at home? Feeling stressed? Relationship worries? Concerns in the classroom? Need to talk things over?

    Life is full of challenges that can get in the way of your study. When those challenges occur, either with life or with study, we are here to help you. Our Engagement Advisors will work with you to put a plan in place to help you to manage obstacles, so you can focus on your studies and aim for success.

  • Student Advocates

    Highlighted

    If you have any concerns or issues with your courses or your tutors, our Student Advocates are here to help you. They provide a listening ear and advice and can guide and support you through the process of resolving your issue.

  • Financial Support

    Our Engagement Advisors can help you get your money sorted. They will make sure you are supported with StudyLink, Work & Income or other appropriate funding. We can also help with providing budgeting advice or accessing hardship funds.

  • Careers Advice

    Are you struggling to work out your career pathway? Or are you on the right track but could still benefit from some helpful advice? We have a Careers Advisor which offers free one-on-one sessions to prospective students, current students, and graduates.

    The Careers Advisor can help you match your interests and values with career options, investigate the current labour market and formulate an action plan to get you to where you want to be.

    We also offer workshops to help prepare and check your CV, cover letters, and assist with interview preparation, to help maximise your employability.

  • Disabilities, mental wellbeing and learning difficulties

    We will support you in your studies if you have a disability, mental or physical health issue or learning difficulty, either long-term or short-term. Our Engagement Advisors will work with you, your programme team, and any external providers, to explore accommodations to help you succeed in your learning. 

    Support services that we offer include:

    • Exam assistance (Reader/Writer, separate accommodations)
    • Advocacy when students are applying for funding of personal technology
    • Confidential support
    • Pastoral Care
    • Development of Educational Support Plans for students
    • Connection with external support providers
    • Information and guidance regarding disabilities and teaching / learning strategies

  • Learning Support

    We are here to help you succeed in your study. Our team of Learning Advisors will work with you in your classes alongside your tutor, in organised workshops or tutorials, or in small groups or by individually that you organise for yourself. Resources on many topics are available through Moodle.

     Learning Advisors work alongside you to:

    • show you learning, reading and writing strategies
    • give you useful feedback on your writing
    • develop your ideas and critical thinking
    • help you plan your workload

    We do not proofread assignments for simple spelling and grammar mistakes, but we do have resources on how to proofread your own work.

    If you have a learning difficulty and would like to discuss support for this, make an appointment with an Engagement Advisor (Disability). They will assess your needs and make an individual support plan.


  • Counselling

    Free counselling is available to all students.


    Piki is a free service for 18-25's to support those with mental distress. Students (18-25) can self-refer through the Piki website.  If you require assistance with the referral process, please contact LSS@WandW.ac.nz or call 0800 141121.

    Our student counselling services for all students are provided by Vitae, a team of independent counsellors located throughout New Zealand. We can support you in accessing these services, or you can self-refer – students are entitled to three free sessions. This service is available in an emergency – you can ring them at any time of the day or night.

  • Health Services

    We provide a range of health and well-being services to help you look after your physical and mental health. 

    Subsidised WelTec and Whitireia student physio appointments are available at all Physio Spot clinics. 

    Registering with your family doctor will likely keep your health costs lower. Most students are eligible for Community Services Card which will reduce the cost of healthcare and services. See the Work & Income website for further information and how to apply.

    The Health Navigator NZ website is a non-profit community initiative providing a place for New Zealanders to find reliable and trustworthy health information and self-care resources. It focuses on promoting clear, consistent messages that enable users to get the information they need at the time they need it. Health Navigator is supported by District Health Boards around New Zealand (including Capital & Coast DHB) and is available in nearly 20 languages. 

    Free call or text 1737 any time, 24 hours a day. You’ll get to talk to (or text with) a trained counsellor. This service is completely free.

  • Maori Student Support

    WelTec

    WelTec’s Tamaiti Whangai team support the success and participation of all Māori students across WelTec campuses, starting with a Māori Student Orientation and Mihi Whakatau, and continuing with other cultural events through the year. Services and support are wide and varied and include assistance with enrolment and scholarship information, mentoring and pastoral support, specialised academic support, advocacy, and pathway planning including employment options.

    Whitireia and the local iwi, Ngāti Toa Rangatira, look forward to welcoming you and your whanau. The Pou Whakamanawa Māori responds to your needs as a Māori student, including mentoring and pastoral care. Opportunities to meet other Māori students include:

    • Pōwhiri and orientation activities
    • Māori specific workshops offering time management and study skills with whakawhanaungatanga and manaakitanga
    • Tuakana/teina or peer study contacts and study groups
    • Ako Ake – a designated Māori and Pasifika study space where you can also relax and socialise
    • Regular sports day and team sport occasions

    Our dedicated Pasifika advisors on all campuses provide academic, pastoral and cultural support to all our Pasifika students. An open door service provides information, advice and encouragement to help you achieve academic success. Our Pasifika orientation events, sports and cultural activities, and Pasifika spaces at the Petone and Porirua campuses will help you connect with other Pasifika students.

  • International Student Support

    The International Student Support team can provide confidential assistance and advice on any questions or concerns you might have in adapting to study and life in New Zealand, including:

    • Information and advice on accommodation options
    • Coping with homesickness and cultural differences as you adjust to living in New Zealand
    • General health and wellbeing
    • Information and advice on accessing welfare facilities, including personal health services, mental health services, drug education and counselling, and problem gambling
    • Advice on accessing information on sexuality education, health promotion, and sexual and reproductive health services
    • Student advocacy and grievance procedures
    • New Zealand law and legal issues
    • Assistance to anyone who is facing difficulties

    As signatories to the New Zealand government's Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice 2016, WelTec and Whitireia are committed to ensuring that our international students are well informed, safe and properly cared for.

  • Library

    Our libraries provide you with thousands of high-quality resources, both in hard copy and online, chosen to help you complete your assignments and support your learning. Book collections are held at most campuses, and you have 24-hour access to the electronic collections. Your student ID card is also your library card, and your student login is your login to access online library resources.  

    Library staff can teach you how to build your information skills: how to access, select and use information and acknowledge it; and if you can’t find something you want, or don’t know what would be useful, the librarians are always ready to help you.

    Library staff can help you to access:

    • Books, magazines and journals, including ebooks and online articles and multi-media
    • Online research databases
    • Course textbooks and recommended readings
    • Research and information skills support
    • APA referencing support
    • Subject guides
