Description

An outline of literacy and numeracy, some background information and ideas to use in teaching.

1. What does literacy and numeracy mean?

Click on this link to read a summary about current ideas in literacy and numeracy and why we need to consider it in our lesson planning.

2. What is embedding literacy and numeracy?

Literacy and/or numeracy are integral to every course.  Embedding literacy and numeracy means weaving in reading, writing, listening or maths instruction with the course content. Embedding explicitly teaches these literacy and numeracy skills while teaching the content.

example 1

  • do they know how to measure quantities accurately?
  • do they know what ratios are?
  • can they estimate amounts?

example 2

Learners may need refer to textbooks, workbooks or manuals to find information.

  • do they understand text features?  eg headings, bold font, paragraphs
  • can they scan (read fast) for the relevant material?
  • do they know how to use a contents page or an index?
  • do they know what a summary looks like and where to find it?

example 3

Learners may need to search online for car parts appropriate to the model of car they are working on.
