Why have an EMP?

The purpose of an EMP is to 'prevent pollution incidents and minimise the risk of prosecution and /or fines'. If you contract for work with Hutt City Council you need to complete this course so that you and HCC have no pollution incidents. People who work for councils, as well as the council themselves, can be prosecuted.

Environmental Management Planning identifies and manages environmental risks and reduces risk by preventing pollution.

Pollution at work

Now go through these six types of pollution to see where they fit with your work activities. For each type of pollution, check your work activities to see if they fit into the category. For example, if you are cutting concrete, you would have a discharge to air when dry cutting and a discharge to land and potentially a discharge to stormwater when wet cutting depending on where you are cutting. You would have noise pollution as well. So you would need to work though those checklists.

With each type of pollution there is a checklist with links to more information, a quiz that will get you to think about your work activities and sometimes a video to watch. The checklist links to other sites provide more nformation on the type of pollution.

After completing the checklists, the information on the checklists will be used in your Environmental Management Plan that you will send to Hutt City Council. So make sure you cover all your work activities and save the checklists to your work computer.
