Employment Relations: Grievances and disputes

This is where you get to practise your problem solving skills. You will analyse and suggest resolutions for a grievance and a dispute at Naturally Baking Ltd. The issues are presented in the video scenarios. You may need to revise the information from this section.

You will work within your forum teams to research the resources and answer the task questions. You need to organise your forum team. You can nominate yourself for positions or suggest other team members. Your forum team needs to:

• split into two groups: the ‘personal grievance’ group and the ‘dispute’ group
• choose a facilitator to direct discussion within the two groups
• choose a reporter to collate and write up the findings of both groups.

Each group needs to:

• decide how the members will work together to research the task questions and deliver feedback
• answer all the questions and collaborate to present your findings.

When researching the information, you need to address the following:

1. Explain the difference between a grievance and a dispute.
2. Describe the dispute and the grievance.
3. Analyse the environment in which it takes place.
4. Analyse the issues involved.
5. Describe the process the worker, the employer, and any other parties involved need to follow.
6. Consider at least two possible solutions.
7. Evaluate the effectiveness and likely outcome of these solutions.

Present the findings of the two groups. Follow your tutor’s instructions for the format and layout of these documents.
