Moodle Structure

Moodle Structure

Hello,

Here's a very basic overview of the pros and cons of the two structures for Moodle:

Structure Pros Cons
Programme Level
  • one space with all the content of the specific programme
  • Have all the students studying the programme in one space; easier to send announcements to all students of that specific programme
  • all tutors added to the space can view, add, delete and edit all the content
  • depending on volume of content, can look overwhelming
  • part-timers will also see the content of the whole course even if they have not officially enrolled in it.
  • students will have to be manually added to the course
  • all tutors added to the space can view, add, delete and edit all the content which might make it difficult to track as you can change what other tutors have done and vice versa
  • any announcements/messages will be sent to everyone added in the programme
Course (subject) Level
  • students are automatically added to the course (subject) using the daily extract
  • easier to manage and organise content - may not be too overwhelming to students depending on course design
  • only tutors teaching the specific course (subject) will have access to it
  •  tutors teaching more than one course (subject) will see several courses listed under "My Courses". So if you are teaching 3 courses (subjects) that have a Moodle space, you will see 3 courses (subjects) under My Courses in Moodle.

OTHER IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • Please note that the extract only adds students. Any student withdrawals regardless of the structure will have to be removed from the course by the tutor manually.
  • Any tutor can add a user to their Moodle space as a tutor, non-editing tutor or student. Only tutors inside the course have this capability.
  • Another enrolment option is to use the ENROLMENT KEY. The enrolment key is sort of a 'password'  you give your students so they can gain access to your Moodle space. Each Moodle space, whether on a programme or course level, can have its own ENROLMENT KEY. The downside of this is that any WelTec student who has the key can get in the Moodle space. It would be the responsibility of the tutor to monitor users who are accessing the Moodle space are actually students who are enrolled in it.

If you have specific questions relating to this, please reply to this forum post so we can keep it all organised using one forum entry.

Cheers,
Ivy

Thanks Ivy,

We have had a quick discussion in my corner of the office and most of us seem to think this is a "no brainer".  It seems the option we have been working with so far is "Course (subject) Level" and that looks like the only logical way to continue!

Hence, we perhaps don't need a meeting to discuss and confirm this?

If there's more to it, and we do need to meet and discuss, perhaps we could do that on Friday afternoon?

Cheers

Adrian

Yep, it's just that some prefer to having one space rather than having to look at multiple ones of the same course especially if it's split by more than one group - that's when people tend to choose using the 'prorgamme' level.  It might not necessarily mean that it's being delivered as a programme but because you have several sets of students studying the same paper (same resources and relatively the same assessment info), they choose to have it on a course level.

The other thing about it is in the said 'programme' structure, if they still want to keep their groupings separate, they make provision for separate forums accordingly.  This setup has mainly been used by our Counselling courses as their courses are taught in the same intake but are being offered in multiple campus locations. Tutors have to be aware to send messages to their respective groups using the forum appropriated for that group.

I think it's very important that tutors are aware of these options as you are the best people to determine how it would work best for your students and you.

Having said that, there are other ways to still make things work in course structured ones for groupwork - example of which was when you used wikis. Of course, that is the concept and it is great that you pioneered the exploration of the tool so we know the real-life application and situations where this tool is more suitable.

Starting with something simple is better on an exploratory phase to minimise potential hiccups. The lesser moving parts, the lesser things can go wrong - isn't that an engineering motto? مبتسم

Just like this simple but ingenius way of making a - I think it was launched in '89? Better than fortified trusses, winch cables but hey, it does use hydraulics so what do I know - guess I'm just amazed at such really cool toy مبتسم Maybe this can be an engineering school project, eheheh.

Anyway, will wait for the information so we can create your Moodle spaces for you. There is a form which needs to be completed. I'll put the form here (we're trialing an online form which we ran yesterday so I'm just making minor changes and will send it here) so we can move on with the process.

Cheers!
