    Staff Guide for delivery of the Literacy and Numeracy Adult Assessment Tool (LNAAT)

       

    The Assessment Tool is a part of a bigger process shown below:




    Knowing your learner includes understanding their current literacy and numeracy skill levels.
    To do this we use the Literacy and Numeracy Adult Assessment Tool (LNAAT).

    1.  BEFORE you run the assessment with your learners

    2.  ON THE DAY of the assessment

    3.  AFTER your learners have completed the assessment

    • Promoting the first assessment



      • Promote the Assessment Tool to your learners
      'Sell' the Assessment Tool to your learners so they 'get' what it does. Explain to learners that the online assessments are a tool, NOT a test. It isn’t about how many they get right or wrong.


      If the learner gets a question right it will make their next question harder. If they get the question wrong then it makes their next question easier. This is called 'adaptive'. This is how the Assessment Tool finds out what strengths they have in literacy and numeracy. 

      • Demonstrate how these skills are needed in the workplace
      The website Skills Highway has Job profiles that give detailed descriptions of the literacy and numeracy skills needed for a range of occupations. There are a number of them to browse through. You could print out the relevant ones for the students to read.


      • Learners set personal goals
      If the learner knows what skills their steps relate to, then they will be able to understand their results better.
      Step Profiles: These one-page learner 'step profiles' give the skills a learner usually has at each step for: 

      These can be used with learners to help them understand their different levels for each skill area.
      You can print these profiles A3 and put them somewhere the learners can see them. Have them think about which step they might be at before they do the assessment. This helps them understand the purpose of the Tool. This could be repeated before they sit the end assessment and could be a motivator to see how they have improved.

      • Personal Progress Record - After doing their first assessment have the learners fill this in. Before they do the exit assessment at the end of the programme, ask them where they think they have moved to. This can help learners be more motivated to sit the exit assessment at a time when they may be sitting a number of other assessments. 

    • Motivating learners to do their end-of-course assessments (progress assessments)

      TEC expects us to use the Assessment Tool for evaluation purposes at the end of a programme. The progress assessments can tell us if we’ve made a difference to our learners’ literacy and numeracy through our teaching. We can use this information in self-evaluation and programme evaluation to show we are meeting learner needs and to consider changes to our programmes and teaching where necessary.

      However, sometimes there has been resistance from learners doing the tool at the end of a programme and tutors have found it difficult to schedule the final assessments. This resistance comes from a variety of factors but the main issue seem to be that they don’t see the point in sitting it again at a time when they are doing lots of other assessments at the end of their course.  If we ensure they understand that re-doing the tool can show their improvement, they're more likely to want to do the LNAAT.       In addition, TEC have indicated that they are going to use the tool results as an indicator that there have been improvements in literacy and numeracy and this will inevitably be linked to funding.
