Provide students with a plan of a house with the sizes of the rooms shown on the plan (eg Bedroom 1 4.5m x 3.6m). Provide dimension lines, without the dimensions shown and ask students to work out the dimensions of the building and indicate the dimensions by completing the writing them on the dimension lines. Ask the students to calculate the overall dimensions, and the area of the building.
This exercise will encourage student to become familiar with the methods of calculating dimensions for a building, provide them with simple calculations to carry out (addition and subtraction) and teach them how to work out the area of a building.
